Homeplus was once a retail haven for millions of South Korean families who shopped for groceries and household goods regularly at its cavernous hypermarkets. But that ritual over almost three decades ended this week when the company closed all its remaining 67 operating outlets nationwide after suspending 37 others earlier as part of its restructuring. The sudden closure of South Korea’s second-largest hypermarket chain reflects not only its financial distress, but also a decline of the shopping...

Head coach refuses to engage in ‘blame game’ after defeat by Argentina Trump joins critics of Tuchel’s tactics in World Cup semi-final elimination Thomas Tuchel has insisted he is not interested in engaging in the “blame game” over England’s World Cup elimination and vowed to close the gap on the leading nations. Even Donald Trump has joined criticism of Tuchel’s tactics in the semi-final defeat by Argentina, with the US president questioning why he made Harry Kane “a defensive player” as England attempted to hold on to a 1-0 lead . But before the third-place playoff against France in Miami on Saturday night that was described by Tuchel as “the match no one wants to play in”, England’s head coach defiantly stood by his decisions and said that he and his players must learn from their experiences. Tehran warns of ‘full-scale offensive’ if US strikes continue Major General Mohsen Rezaee, a senior Iranian military adviser, has warned that if the US continues bombing Iran over the coming days, Tehran will launch “full-scale offensive operations”, according to state-controlled news agency IRIB. "Iran will no longer limit itself to retaliatory, like-for-like responses ... and no political border will be safe," he said. Rezaee also said that the “policy of negotiating during war is over”. "Until now, we have not focused on expanding the war, nor on launching an invasion. Until now, the goal was deterrence, to put an end to the conflict. We seized Hormuz to end the conflict," he said.

Iran strikes: Jordan intercepts 10 missiles, Bahrain sounds sirens The Jordanian military has said its air defences downed 10 Iranian missiles that breached the country’s airspace early on Saturday morning. The military said the interceptions caused no casualties or material damage, and Royal Engineers have begun clearing and securing debris from the impact sites. Iran’s IRNA posted on X “footage demonstrating Iranian missiles breaching Jordan's air defence networks and rendering the US Patriot systems entirely ineffective”. CBS News, citing officials, said that several American service members were injured in Iranian attacks on Jordanian bases this week. Bahrain, meanwhile, sounded sirens for the third time in just a few hours, with officials urgently advising residents to take cover immediately.

Report: Nearly a quarter of Israelis considering leaving if Netanyahu is re-elected About 23 percent of Israelis are considering leaving the country, or have a relative who is, if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is re-elected, according to a Channel 12 poll reported by The Times of Israel. The survey found that another 68 percent said they were not considering leaving the country, and the remaining respondents were unsure. The poll also found that 67 percent opposed legislation passed by Netanyahu's coalition this week, including a law enshrining Torah study as a quasi-constitutional value and another aimed at shielding ultra-Orthodox Israelis who evade military service from arrest. Twenty-one percent said they supported the legislation, while the rest said they did not know, according to The Times of Israel.

Lebanese education minister says Israel destroys three more schools The Israeli military has looted and destroyed three schools in southern Lebanon, Rima Karami, the country’s education and higher education minister, said in a statement carried by Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) on Friday. This brings the number of Lebanese schools destroyed in Israeli strikes to 20. Unesco said last month that 17 schools have been destroyed and more than 100 damaged in Lebanon since Israel launched its military campaign. About 500,000 Lebanese children remain out of school because of the conflict, according to UNESCO.
