Lebanon’s president defends Lebanon-Israel framework agreement Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has pushed back against criticism of the country’s ceasefire framework with Israel signed last week in Washington after Hezbollah supporters took to the streets in protest against the agreement. “Lebanon’s problem is with Israel, and it is a sovereign state that decided to negotiate on its own behalf,” Aoun is reported as saying by Lebanon's National News Agency, adding that “it has not relinquished its legal, political or field principles in the framework agreement, as some are claiming.” The framework was criticised by Hezbollah for not making the withdrawal of Israeli troops from occupying southern Lebanon contingent on the disarmament of Hezbollah. The president warned that “discord is forbidden” and discouraged people from taking to the streets in an address delivered to delegations from the Lebanese bar association and economic bodies. Israeli Knesset passes bill limiting mosque loudspeakers The Knesset on Wednesday passed its preliminary reading of a bill, put forward by the far-right party Otzma Yehudit, that would limit mosque loudspeakers. According to Israeli media, “Mosques and other houses of worship would be barred from installing or operating a public address system without a permit. Police would be granted authority to enter premises where a violation is suspected in order to halt the use of the system, and in cases of continued violation, to confiscate the equipment entirely.” Violation of the rule would carry a fine of up to 50,000 shekels. The bill received 50 votes in its favour and 36 against, but requires three more readings to come into effect. Phones and earpieces aplenty as football supporters find World Cup thriller against DR Congo hard to ignore “Pssst!” The security staff at Wimbledon don’t do a lot of talking. The job of guarding Centre Court seems to be only a little less serious than standing sentry on Whitehall. But this guard, standing to attention outside the media centre in his blue peaked cap and freshly pressed jacket, has something to say to his colleague three feet away. “Pssst!” he whispers from out the side of his mouth. “Rashford’s starting.” His colleague shifted his eyes right while keeping his head straight ahead. “Rashford? Not Gordon?” Wimbledon is about the one corner of England that isn’t showing the game . You’re not even in easy reach of a screen. The All England Club’s chief executive Sally Bolton said at the beginning of the week that they wouldn’t be showing football on any of the hundreds of TVs around the grounds, never mind the giant ones on the hill and in the South Village. She didn’t really need to explain it. Asking Wimbledon whether it will show the match has become a tradition of its own in years when there’s a football tournament on. Continue reading...

Some days they talk. Some days they fight. Iran and the United States have settled into a pattern since the truce signed last month. This Wednesday in Doha... they’re sort of talking. Both sides present in indirect negotiations. Whatever comes of that, the attention's now shifting to Tehran, where the Islamic Republic’s preparing for Friday’s kickoff of four days of state funeral proceedings for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei with the regime boasting of a growing list of foreign dignitaries, a show of strength for a regime that’s more than rebounded since Khamenei was killed on the very first day of the war. A funeral intended as a victory lap for a leadership that’s always revered martyrdom? Definitely.

Pro-Palestine immigrant ousts 30-year veteran in Colorado Democratic primary Democratic Socialists in the US netted a landmark win on Tuesday after a 29-year-old Ethiopian immigrant and political newcomer unseated a member of Congress who has held that job since before she was born. Melat Kiros, a lawyer and PhD student, mounted a stunning upset for establishment Democrats after she was declared the winner of the Democratic primary in Colorado's 1st congressional district, which includes the state capital, Denver. Kiros' opponent, Diana DeGette, had not yet acknowledged the results of the race on either of her two X accounts by Wednesday morning, but had received the backing of Colorado's elected Democratic Party leaders in a state that has long been a deep Democratic blue. As of 11am local time in Denver on Wednesday, just over 81 percent of the votes had been counted, but the Associated Press, which typically calls the races in the US, declared Kiros the projected winner at midnight, indicating that DeGette's numbers have no chance of catching up. DeGette spent three decades on Capitol Hill, and according to the watchdog Aipac Tracker, has received well over $1.6m from the pro-Israel lobbying group in that time.
