Pro-Palestine immigrant ousts 30-year veteran in Colorado Democratic primary Submitted by MEE staff on Wed, 07/01/2026 - 16:26 The upset for establishment Democrats follows a similar wave across blue states emboldened by Zohran Mamdani's win in New York City Democratic congressional candidate Melat Kiros addresses supporters at an election-night watch party after winning the Colorado primary on 30 June 2026 in Denver, Colorado (Michael Ciaglo/Getty Images via AFP) Off Democratic Socialists in the US netted a landmark win on Tuesday after a 29-year-old Ethiopian immigrant and political newcomer unseated a member of Congress who has held that job since before she was born. Melat Kiros, a lawyer and PhD student, mounted a stunning upset for establishment Democrats after she was declared the winner of the Democratic primary in Colorado's 1st congressional district, which includes the state capital, Denver. Kiros' opponent, Diana DeGette, had not yet acknowledged the results of the race on either of her two X accounts by Wednesday morning, but had received the backing of Colorado's elected Democratic Party leaders in a state that has long been a deep Democratic blue. As of 11am local time in Denver on Wednesday, just over 81 percent of the votes had been counted, but the Associated Press, which typically calls the races in the US, declared Kiros the projected winner at midnight, indicating that DeGette's numbers have no chance of catching up. DeGette spent three decades on Capitol Hill, and according to the watchdog Aipac Tracker , has received well over $1.6m from the pro-Israel lobbying group in that time. "If the only issue that you care about is this issue, then you should not vote for me," DeGette famously told a voter in March who confronted her about not supporting the Block the Bombs Act in Congress to limit weapons transfers to Israel. Kiros, an outspoken critic of Israel, is now all but guaranteed that seat in the House of Representatives in the November midterm election. She joins the ranks of pro-Palestine progressives from Maine, to New York and New Jersey, and into Pennsylvania who have recently sealed Democratic primary wins that are almost certainly sending them to Washington, DC. 'I didn't flinch' In her victory speech on Tuesday, Kiros recounted how she was fired from the multinational law firm Sidley Austin in 2023 for supporting the anti-war protests that had taken hold across US college campuses. "When I wrote a letter defending students’ rights to protest the genocide in Gaza... my law firm told me, take it down or you’re fired," she said. Aipac rebuffed as Mamdani-backed candidates sweep NYC Democratic primaries Read More » "I didn’t flinch. I didn’t flinch because I stood by every word, and I always will. But I know that will not be the only moment where those in power will tell me to change my tune, to not rock the boat. That seems to happen a lot in Congress." Jewish Voice for Peace, which backed Kiros' campaign, said on Wednesday that "in the final weeks, corporate dark money flooded the race to stop Melat - much of it from AIPAC, Amazon, and Lockheed Martin... and they smeared Melat as antisemitic for refusing to stay silent about Israel's genocide". The Democratic National Committee (DNC), the official body that steers the party and sends out congratulatory press releases to winning candidates on election nights, did not acknowledge Kiros' victory until nearly 10 hours after the results were declared. "Melat Kiros is fighting to make the American dream a reality for the hardworking people of Colorado. She is a tireless advocate within her community and has consistently stood up for her neighbors," DNC chair Ken Martin said. "In Congress, she will be a fierce champion for expanding access to healthcare, investing in childcare, making housing more affordable, protecting workers’ rights, and ensuring corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share. The DNC is ready to work alongside her to lower costs and deliver for working families." The DNC has come under fire for not openly acknowledging that its presidential candidate in 2024, Kamala Harris, lost the election in part due to her refusal to condemn Israel's genocide in Gaza and pressure it to end its war on the enclave. As of 30 June, at least 73,066 Palestinians have been killed, based on deaths recorded by Gaza's health ministry. It has also largely stood by its ageing establishment candidates, despite poll after poll showing that younger Democratic Socialists, such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, are now setting the bar for the next generation of lawmakers. Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Kiros, congratulated her on X. "The tide is turning," he wrote. "Americans are tired of status quo politics." The word No 1 has had difficult periods previously, but at 35 and a wealthy family man, could he now be tempted towards a more relaxed lifestyle? Magnus Carlsen’s four defeats in a row during the World Team Rapid in Hong Kong last week, coupled with his disappointing fourth place among six grandmasters in Oslo last month, have sparked discussion about whether the Norwegian, now a wealthy 35-year-old with a baby son, might be tempted towards a further reduction in his chess activities and a more relaxed lifestyle. Carlsen had not previously lost four games in succession since Gausdal 2002, when he was 11 years old. The four defeats came after Carlsen had begun well, with a draw and then two victories, one against a historic rival , the Ukrainian veteran Vasyl Ivanchuk. That win was achieved in a classic example of a style and technique which Carlsen has made his own, a prolonged squeeze and grind maintained despite acute time pressure, as was his next victory against China’s Xu Xiangyu. The team time trial returns as this year’s Tour starts in Barcelona for the first time in its history The first team time trial since 2019, past many of Barcelona’s prime tourist sites – La Rambla, Sagrada Familia – but with a novel format: riders’ times will be taken individually at the uphill finish. So rather than trying to finish four or five riders together, teams will wear out non-climbers early on, then have lighter men peeling off one by one in the finale – replicating the usual approach to a summit finish in a road race. Advance warning: Jonas Vingegaard’s Visma, Remco Evenepoel’s Red Bull, and Tadej Pogacar’s UAE Emirates are masters of this game. Continue reading...

The son of two vicars, the smart-cookie Saints forward is eager to front up to South Africa after a chat with their skipper The general view in South Africa is that England do not fully understand what they are up against. To be a Springbok is to represent the hopes and dreams of millions and feel a uniquely powerful force. Siya Kolisi must have been taken aback, consequently, to be approached after a Test at Twickenham by a young English opponent seeking to arrange a chat on the subject of racial unity. The curious Englishman was the Northampton forward Alex Coles, a player far removed from the average rugby jock. The son of two Church of England vicars – his mum, Olivia, writes her sermons on a Friday so she can attend his Saturday matches – he is a similarly firm believer in having a purpose in life beyond the weekend’s result. Wigmore Hall, London Marking the 50th anniversary of the Soweto uprising, a stirring programme culminated with Leon Bosch’s double bass sounding a fragile note of hope On 16 June, 1976 , more than 10,000 students from Soweto took to the streets in a peaceful protest against the apartheid regime. Police answered with shots. It was a spark that kindled into months of conflict, a turning-point in South African history. Freedom Songs – a day of concerts at the Wigmore Hall – marked the uprising’s 50th anniversary, culminating in a performance by Leon Bosch and the Ubuntu Ensemble. Double-bassist Bosch is the son of an activist father, and he himself was arrested in 1976 – an event that derailed his ambitions to study law, steering him instead towards music. In a room full of South Africans, onstage and off, it was one of many such stories, the atmosphere quietly charged. Continue reading...

Anfield Stadium, Liverpool Adding eye-popping spectacle to this anniversary reprise of The Black Parade is fun, but what really stands out is the tremendous songcraft My Chemical Romance take the stage to the strains of the Carpenters’ Yesterday Once More, its syrupy but heart-rending tones offering a reminder that MCR’s current tour is essentially about nostalgia: it celebrates the 20th anniversary of the release of the emo figureheads’ third album The Black Parade. An hour-long concept piece about a dying cancer patient, it was a band throwing everything they could think of at an album, apparently gripped by fear that the multi-platinum success of its predecessor, 2004’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, would prove fleeting. It variously sounded like pop punk, Queen, Britpop, glam, heavy metal, Pink Floyd circa The Wall and Kurt Weill, so wilfully overblown that when Liza Minnelli made a guest appearance on vocals, the listener scarcely raised an eyebrow. The end result succeeded in catapulting the band to even greater fame and its reputation has only increased in subsequent years – in some quarters, it’s openly described as the Sgt Pepper of emo. A 2019 feature in the New York Times detected its influence not merely in the work of a host of subsequent emo bands, but in the oeuvres of pop and rap names such as Juice WRLD, Lil Uzi Vert, 100 Gecs, Billie Eilish, Melanie Martinez and Post Malone. The final season of the hit chef show is the most entertaining and purely enjoyable since the first – plus everyone ended up getting what they wanted! What an incredible rollercoaster No show has ever needed to end like The Bear. The series initially made its name as a vehicle of pure forward momentum, the story of a burned-out high-end chef drafted in to fix up and save his dead brother’s sandwich restaurant. Through eight breathless episodes we saw Carmy get repeatedly pummelled by the stresses of the job – fights, demands, an accidental stabbing – as he sought to rebuild it in his own image. With the benefit of hindsight, this probably should have been the entire show. Because The Bear was in such an almighty clatter to get where it wanted to go that, when it got there, it didn’t have the first clue how to proceed. Seasons three and four both stalled badly, in a morass of montages and flashback episodes that felt like placeholders. The drop-off was tangible. Continue reading...

Birds of War is an award-winning docudrama in which its own directors fall in love while reporting the horrors in Syria. They explain why they needed a psychotherapist to complete it The air is thick with smoke and dust, the ground littered with the twisted remains of burning vehicles. Children scream and sirens blare as activist and videographer Abd Alkader Habak rushes to help the injured after the bombing of an evacuee convoy in Aleppo at the height of Syria’s civil war in 2017. A voice note bubble pops up on Habak’s phone screen. “My bird are you OK?” says BBC journalist Janay Boulos. “Get away from there, run.” For more than a year, Habak and Boulos have been working to document Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad ’s atrocities against his own people, their connection deepening all the time despite the physical distance. But this exchange represents the moment the pair’s relationship shifts from colleagues to something more. “I don’t want footage,” Boulos says, fear clearly detectable in her voice as she tries to follow things from her desk in London. “I don’t want anything, just please take care. I am here whenever you want to talk.” Continue reading...

A preview of the forthcoming sci-fi game from Gareth Damian Martin showcases their unmistakable talent for innovation and game design Over the past decade, an impression has taken root among gamers that any real creativity and originality in the industry is to be found in the indie, rather than mainstream, sector. Gareth Damian Martin can claim some responsibility for that. Their first game, 2020’s In Other Waters, merged sci-fi and underwater xenobiology in a uniquely calming and thought-provoking manner, while Citizen Sleeper (2022) and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector (2025) were full-blown sci-fi epics with ultraminimal aesthetics and a rare intelligence. Martin has broken with tradition by unveiling their next game, Signet City, far in advance of its 2027 launch. Set in a dystopian monochrome city, it’s a narrative role-playing adventure with a curious first-person perspective. “You play as a parasite,” says Martin. “And it felt natural that it should be a game where you see the world through the eyes of your hosts, very literally. You wake up in the mind of a person called Sid at the same time as she’s waking up in the river of a city. You’re coming to understand what you are, why it is that you’re in the mind of this person who doesn’t know that you’re there, along with what your capabilities are, and what the world is, through Sid.” Continue reading...

Elizabeth Warren and colleagues demanded tighter rules on political figures’ crypto dealings, citing disclosures of large-scale Trump family profits US politics live – latest updates Donald Trump has again been accused of “brazen crypto corruption” after financial disclosures revealed his family’s cryptocurrency ventures generated more than $1bn in his first year back in the White House. Elizabeth Warren , the top Democrat on the Senate banking committee, said the figures showed why US Congress needed to act. “The crypto legislation heading to the Senate floor must prevent the President, Vice President, senior administration officials, members of Congress, and their families from profiting off the crypto industry,” she said. “If it does not, it will only turbocharge Donald Trump’s brazen crypto corruption.” Continue reading...
