Tunisia v Japan: World Cup 2026 – live
⚽️ Kick-off time: 9pm local/2pm AEST/5am BST/12am EDT ⚽️ Player guide | Bracketology | Golden Boot | Mail Jonathan Hello everybody and welcome to live coverage of Tunisia v Japan from Estadio Monterrey. Kick-off in this Group F clash is 9pm local time (12am EDT/5am BST/2pm AEST). Wherever you happen to be in the world thank you for keeping me company on what is perhaps the graveyard shift of the entire tournament. There isn’t the novelty of the first round of group matches, there isn’t the jeopardy of the third, and our cups already runneth over thanks to two of the matches of the World Cup so far already this matchday. When given oxygen the Netherlands were simply too good, scoring straight after the restart when Summerville twisted Sweden inside out and allowed Dumfries to cross again. Gakpo could not miss from a couple of yards and, enjoying a wildly productive afternoon of his own, proceeded to score another. This time he took a pass from Summerville, who had not been deemed fit to start, and cracked low to Kristoffer Nordfeldt’s right from 20 yards. Continue reading...

China-led team develops AI system to track radar-disrupting space hurricanes
A China-led team has developed an AI system to detect space hurricanes, a phenomenon in the Earth’s upper atmosphere that can disrupt satellite signals, radar and radio communications. While the hurricane-like atmospheric phenomenon can have major space weather effects, detection has so far relied on a tedious process of studying satellite images manually. The team said it had developed a new deep-learning system that could automatically detect and pinpoint space hurricanes through ultraviolet...

Cross-border biotech deals grow more complex as US targets China investment links
Cross-border biotech deals between China and the United States are becoming more complicated and could face a modest slowdown as Washington steps up efforts to restrict investment and technology transfers, according to industry analysts. “There will be more geopolitical scrutiny going forward. This scrutiny may lead to slightly fewer deals than without it,” said Diederik Stadig, senior healthcare economist at ING Research. Despite the growing regulatory hurdles, Stadig said the broader trend of...

To lead in global education, Hong Kong must go beyond narrow metrics
Hong Kong’s universities are often celebrated for their global rankings, research output and international reputation. Yet behind these achievements lies a quieter, more fundamental question: how do we define academic excellence and are we measuring the right things? Academic life is driven by intrinsic motivations. Scholars are guided by curiosity, a pursuit of excellence and a commitment to professionalism: integrity, responsibility and accountability. Many see their work as part of a larger...

England offer rare peek behind the curtain with no place to hide under Tuchel
There was more insight at the World Cup training base than usual with intensity on the rise under Thomas Tuchel The tall hooded figure kept barking instructions under a hot Missouri sun. Thomas Tuchel was looking for perfection as preparations for Ghana geared up. England’s head coach watched from a distance at first but it was not long before he was making sure the training drill was up his standards. Tuchel, wearing a hoodie to protect himself from the UV rays, loomed over a group made up of Elliot Anderson, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Djed Spence and Ollie Watkins. This was a rare peek behind the curtain. At international tournaments there are days when journalists are allowed to watch 15 minutes of open training. They are often anodyne experiences, limited to a bit of jogging around, maybe a glimpse of a rondo if you’re lucky, but there was more insight at England’s base in Kansas City on Saturday morning. Mannequins were carefully arranged in four zones and it soon became clear there is no hiding place when Tuchel is watching. Continue reading...

Former Saudi intelligence chief urges stronger GCC unity
Former Saudi intelligence chief urges stronger GCC unity Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia's former intelligence chief and ambassador, has called on Gulf states to establish a joint defence network capable of responding collectively to threats against member countries. Writing in Asharq Al-Awsat on Saturday, he said the Gulf Cooperation Council had faced repeated challenges and should "stand together like a solid, fortified structure" to strengthen regional security. Turki also called on Iran to abandon what he characterised as ambitions for regional dominance and to end support for groups including Hezbollah and the Houthis. At the same time, he urged Israel to halt what he described as its "bloody brutality" and the seizure of Arab lands. He further argued that Western countries should stop providing what he called diplomatic and military backing that shields Israel from accountability.

Iranian speaker says martyrs guide mission to Switzerland
Iranian speaker says martyrs guide mission to Switzerland Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf arrived in Zurich on Saturday for talks aimed at advancing implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington. In a post on X, Qalibaf said he remained committed to those killed during the recent conflict and described them as a guiding force for the delegation's work. "I regard the innocent children of Minab and all the martyrs of our beloved Iran as constant witnesses to my actions and conduct," Qalibaf wrote. "They see us and have expectations of us." The delegation, which also includes foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, is expected to discuss how obligations contained in the agreement will be carried out. Ahead of the visit, foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that the trip should not be viewed as the start of a new round of negotiations, saying: "This trip is essentially aimed at demanding the fulfilment of the other party's commitments. Any understanding or agreement is ultimately tested during the implementation phase."
