'Middle East situation could escalate rapidly': US urges citizens to exercise caution The US government has told its citizens currently in the Middle East that the security environment remains "complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation", urging them to exercise heightened vigilance.

In a statement, the state department asked Americans to also be aware of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.

In separate travel alerts for Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, Kuwait and Jordan, US diplomatic missions in the nine countries said the security environment in the Middle East poses “the risk of flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions as regional tensions rise”.

"Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports. This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly.

Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region," the alert said.

The alerts warned that Iran and groups supportive of Tehran could target US interests overseas or locations associated with Americans.

US citizens were advised to monitor airline and airport operations, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings and follow instructions from local authorities.
