US sanctions 27 Iranian airlines The US Treasury announced new sanctions on 36 entities, including 27 Iranian airlines, for “supporting Iran’s aviation sector”. The US Treasury said in a statement on Tuesday that the Iranian government uses the aviation sector to “move weapons, personnel and illicit cargo” and the sanctions were following through on the US's promise to impose “severe consequences” on entities providing “financial lifelines” to Iran. “Let this be a warning to anyone doing business with Iran’s remaining airlines, all of which we sanctioned today,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, warning that “you are at risk of being cut off from the global financial system”.

US will not follow UK on Israeli settlement sanctions, says Rubio US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that the US will not take the same action as the UK over Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, but that he would not provide any further comment beyond that for now. Speaking to reporters, Rubio added the US does “not want to see some uptick in violence, or an uptick in conflict or tensions in the West Bank at a very tenuous time for the region”. This comes after US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee suggested the Trump administration could retaliate against Britain over its new trade sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is expected to outline a raft of new measures on Israel in parliament in the early afternoon. A well-placed Labour source said on Monday that "the prime minister and foreign secretary are going to set out a comprehensive reset in the British government's approach" to the situation in Israel and Palestine. Middle East Eye revealed in August that Andy Burnham's government had decided to ban settlement goods. Whitehall sources have told MEE that the measures announced on Tuesday should be understood as the start of a new approach to foreign policy, and are expected to be followed by further measures. Burnham has not spoken to his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, since he became prime minister in July. He reportedly briefed President Donald Trump on his plans to introduce sanctions on Israel on Monday afternoon. The United States privately urged the British government not to go ahead with the measures, MEE understands. The ban is domestically popular, as new polling conducted by Opinium and published by the European Council on Foreign Relations shows that 46 percent of British adults support the ban on trade with Israeli settlements, while only 18 percent opposed it. That support rises to nearly three-quarters when people who did not have an opinion are excluded from the figures. The new measures come at a pivotal moment, as Israel's new E1 settlement project east of Jerusalem is poised to effectively cut the occupied West Bank in two. Britain’s settlement goods ban could therefore have a significant impact. The number, equivalent to an entire hospital, refers to those doctors who left the country for a period of at least 12 months between 2023 and 2025. The researchers recorded 416 departures in 2023, 530 in 2024, and what they said was an initial estimate of 419 in 2025. Itai Ater, one of the professors who carried out the study, wrote that the country had been "losing its best people" since 2023, the year that Israel began its genocide in the Gaza Strip. “All of us have family members waiting for surgery or other medical care," he said. "The departure of nearly 1,400 doctors translates directly into longer wait times, less effective medical care, and ultimately severe harm to our quality of life. ” The report said rates were particularly high among paediatricians, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and ear, nose and throat specialists.
