'Climate change is really here: We should seize this crisis moment to create a new momentum'
Oliver Farry is pleased to welcome Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, Climate Scientist and Professor at the Universities of Louvain and Liège in Belgium. Europe's latest heatwave is further evidence of a structural transformation of the continent's climate, warns Professor van Ypersele. His central argument rejects both fatalism and complacency. While insisting that humanity has not yet reached "the point of no return," he argues that the world has entered a period of exceptional urgency in which the costs of delaying climate action are escalating rapidly. He develops three interconnected themes: extreme heat, wildfires and public health crises as manifestations of a changing climate; he criticises the inadequacy of current political responses, suggesting that governments continue to underestimate the scale and immediacy of the challenge despite mounting scientific evidence; and he argues that adaptation and mitigation must proceed simultaneously: societies must become more resilient to unavoidable climate impacts while accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels to prevent even greater disruption.

Sehnaoui, who faces corruption allegations in Lebanon, and former US envoy Morgan Ortagus hosted the dinner on Monday at the Four Seasons hotel. According to Israeli journalist Barak Ravid, attendees also included Graham's family and Republican and Democratic senators. US President Donald Trump's far-right senior adviser Stephen Miller, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Facebook executive Dina Powell McCormick, former adviser to the Department of Government Efficiency Katie Miller, and Israeli ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter also attended. Sehnaoui, chief executive of Societe Generale de Banque au Liban (SGBL) and wealth management firm Fidus, has been a controversial figure in Lebanon since the 2019 financial crisis. Prosecutors have charged him and SGBL with alleged money laundering linked to currency trading during the financial crisis. The bank denies any wrongdoing. Sehnaoui's decision to host Netanyahu also comes as Israel continues its bombing campaign in Lebanon, which has killed more than 4,300 people since 2 March, while Israeli forces remain in parts of southern Lebanon. Sehnaoui has been accused of links to far-right Christian organisations in Lebanon, and has also been described as a "committed Zionist". Lebanon has no relations with Israel and contact between Israelis and Lebanese is illegal. However, some political organisations and groups in Lebanon - primarily from the Maronite Christian community - have long had covert ties with their southern neighbour and advocated establishing relations. Israel clears Jewish supremacist party to contest election Israel will allow a far-right Kahanist party to contest October’s election after Shin Bet chief David Zini reversed the security agency’s earlier position that it should be barred. Shin Bet initially found that Kahanist activists Baruch Marzel and Michael Ben Ari effectively controlled the party, whose name translates to "A Whole and Strong Jewish Israel,". Ben Ari previously chaired the far-right Jewish Power party headed by the Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir. The agency’s intelligence assessment found that Marzel and Ben Ari intended to use the new party to advance the ideology of Rabbi Meir Kahane’s ultranationalist Kach movement. It also found that the pair deliberately left their names off the party’s list of founders to hide their involvement. Israel and several other governments designated Kach a terrorist organisation following its involvement in violent extremist attacks. Kahane founded the movement around an ideology of Jewish supremacy, the annexation of occupied Palestinian territory and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
