UN Secretary General Guterres urges reforms of Security Council

The day began with Donald Trump threatening to annihilate Iran but ended with a three-hour meeting between US and Iranian mediators, which Trump described as “very good.

” Trump also held high-level talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with both sides saying they wanted the war in Ukraine to end before winter.

Today, Zelensky and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are among those addressing the UN General Assembly, as world leaders seek ways to end the two conflicts dominating global politics.

The assembly also marks UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ final one, with him warning of a deterioration in multilateral cooperation. Carys Garland reports.
