(Screenshot/@ytirawi/X} Off Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed in an interview with Fox News on Sunday that Christians in Lebanon had asked Israel to “annex” their villages, many of which Israeli forces have damaged or destroyed. Speaking on the pro-Israel US news outlet with host Jacqui Heinrich on "The Sunday Briefing", Netanyahu said “we… take care of our friends, especially the Christians in the Middle East”. “Christian villages in Lebanon some of them have actually asked to be annexed to Israel because we protect them against Hezbollah fanatics who want to kill them and we do the same things with Christians everywhere… in the Middle East,” said Netanyahu. But Netanyahu’s remarks sit uneasily beside Israel’s own record in Lebanon, where its forces have destroyed churches, damaged Christian religious sites and filmed soldiers desecrating Christian symbols. The Israeli prime minister also made the comments just two weeks after his far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said "all of Lebanon must burn" in a social media post following the deaths of four Israeli soldiers in occupied southern Lebanon. Netanyahu, who faces an International Criminal Court arrest warrant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, offered no evidence that Christian villages in Lebanon had asked for Israeli annexation or protection. He also offered no evidence that Hezbollah had targeted Christian villages. The Lebanese group’s main Christian ally in Lebanese politics is the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM). Israel’s Christian problem Netanyahu’s claim that Christians are calling for Israeli protection also came as Israel faces growing international condemnation for its attacks on Lebanon, including on the country’s Christian communities. In May, the French organisation L'Oeuvre d'Orient said Israeli troops demolished a convent belonging to the Salvatorian Sisters, a Greek Catholic religious order, in the village of Yaroun. Another viral video later showed an Israeli soldier in southern Lebanon desecrating a statue of the Virgin Mary. Last year, Israel reduced the Melkite Greek Catholic St George Church in the southern Lebanese village of Derdghaya to rubble. Israel’s attacks have not only targeted Lebanon’s Christian communities. In the occupied Palestinian territories, Jewish settlers have burned Palestinian Christian villages, while violence against Christian clergy and churches has escalated. The attacks threaten to undermine Israel’s standing among one of its core constituencies in the US: evangelical Christians. Later in the interview, Netanyahu claimed “it's not only the Christians in Lebanon who ask for our protection. It's the Druze, it's… the Sunni Muslims and quite a few of the Shiite Muslims too”. He provided no evidence that any of those groups had asked for Israeli protection. Standing outside New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, activists from Defend Our Juries handed out leaflets urging serving officers to join Palestine Action. Police arrested the demonstrators under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act, which criminalises inviting support for a proscribed organisation and carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. The arrests mark an escalation in the policing of the campaign. At previous Defend Our Juries protests, police largely relied on Section 13 of the Terrorism Act, which makes it an offence to display items or symbols that arouse reasonable suspicion of support for a proscribed organisation, after demonstrators held placards expressing support for Palestine Action. Among those arrested on Saturday was Reverend Sue Parfitt, an 83-year-old Anglican priest and long-time peace campaigner. Defend Our Juries said it organised the protest to mark one year since it launched its “Saving Lives is Not Terrorism” campaign, which it says has led to more than 3,500 arrests under terrorism legislation. “This action marks a substantial escalation in the campaign, Saving Lives is Not Terrorism,” a spokesperson for Defend Our Juries said. “It may seem tongue-in-cheek to invite the police to join Palestine Action, but the police haven’t seen the funny side. They have arrested everyone under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act. Fourteen years in prison is no joke. ” The spokesperson urged police to investigate the British operations of Elbit Systems, which the group describes as a major supplier of drones to the Israeli military, rather than arrest pro-Palestine protesters. “The ongoing attempt to silence peaceful opposition to genocide will continue to backfire,” the spokesperson said. “Britain is a country full of decent people, appalled by Israel’s crimes against humanity. Ship-tracking firm says four ships changed course in Hormuz Four vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz via the route along Oman’s coast have altered course, ship-tracing firm Windward said. In a post on X, Windward said two of the vessels reversed course and the other two diverted to a central corridor. Iran opposes ships using the southern route through Oman’s territorial waters and has previously attacked at least two vessels travelling that corridor. The attacks triggered retaliatory attacks on Iranian military assets by the US in and around Hormuz. Tehran has repeatedly said it will solely be responsible for managing traffic in the Strait of Hormuz during the 60 days specified in its MoU with the US. On Saturday, Iran’s envoy to China said new fees would be charged to ships transiting Hormuz, but “friendly nations” would receive special treatment.

Turkey eyes US green light for fighter jet engines at NATO summit US President Donald Trump's visit to Ankara for the NATO summit could help secure Turkey's acquisition of dozens of fighter jet engines, but won't resolve the F-35 dispute that has soured ties, analysts have told AFP. The July 7-8 summit will bring together leaders from the military alliance's 32 member states. Last month, Trump promised to make Erdogan "very happy" when asked about Turkey looking to secure F110 jet engines and being readmitted to the F-35 fighter jet programme. "It's likely to be the green light for the F110 GE engines for the KAAN fighter plane, about 40 of them," Sinan Ulgen, director of the Istanbul-based Edam think tank, told AFP. "Turkey has produced a couple of prototypes which are flying with the F110 engine, but it has been waiting for the supply of additional engines to increase the number of KAAN platforms," he said. KAAN is a twin-engine stealth fighter being developed by Turkey to replace the fleet of F-16s as Ankara seeks to join the exclusive club of nations producing fifth-generation combat aircraft. Although Turkey will eventually fit the fighter with its own domestically-produced engine,-- the F110s lacking stealth capability -- that project is still in the preliminary design phase. Turkey received a first batch of 10 F110s in September, and talks with the US government to acquire 80 more were "ongoing", he said. But that's been held up by a lack of political clearance linked to Turkey's 2017 acquisition of a Russian S-400 missile defence system.
