It comes after a year-long legal and public campaign by Ghanem against the university’s decision.

Ghanem said he felt “vindicated” by the outcome, describing it as a victory for students who have challenged university restrictions on pro-Palestine activism.

“After a year-long legal and public battle, I can now say that we took on a 200-year-old institution and we won,” Ghanem told Middle East Eye.

“This sets a new precedent that university crackdowns on pro-Palestine speech and protest ought to be overturned.

” Ghanem said the decision should not be viewed as a personal victory, but as a victory for the other students who have faced disciplinary action or put their degrees at risk through their activism at King's College London.

“But this is not a win for me. It is a win for the 25 other students who have put their degrees on the line,” he said.

“This is their win, and the win of every single student at KCL, in London, across the UK, the West and beyond who campaigned against this crackdown.

” The case comes amid growing controversy over the treatment of pro-Palestine students at British universities since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023.

Students and campaigners have accused universities of imposing disproportionate restrictions on Palestine-related speech and protest, while universities have defended disciplinary measures as necessary to enforce their rules.

He is an Egyptian student who came to the UK after previously being jailed in Egypt. Last year, MEE reported that Ghanem faced the prospect of being deported to Egypt, where he was at risk of torture and persecution.

Before attending the London university, Ghanem was imprisoned with his brother and father for opposing the Egyptian government in 2020. This experience prompted him to flee to the UK for his safety.

Ghanem told MEE that King's was aware of his family's persecution by Egyptian security forces, as he had written about it in his application to study at the university.

His immigration situation became intertwined with his dispute with KCL after the university suspended him over his pro-Palestine activism.

Last year, Liberty Investigates found that KCL has disciplined more students over Palestine activism than any other university in the UK.

The university’s treatment of pro-Palestine students has been challenged by activists, who argue that disciplinary action has had a chilling effect on students’ ability to protest and express political views.
