UN chief warns of ‘grave consequences’ from Hormuz escalation

UN chief warns of ‘grave consequences’ from Hormuz escalation UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres urged restraint amid reports of further escalation in and around the Strait of Hormuz, his spokesperson said on Wednesday, warning of potentially grave consequences for civilians and the global economy.

Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric cited reports of attacks on commercial vessels and threats against maritime and energy infrastructure.

He said navigational rights and freedom of navigation must be fully restored and respected under international law.

Guterres urged the parties to use diplomatic channels and resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiations.

The UN Secretariat remained ready to support credible efforts toward de-escalation and a durable settlement, Dujarric said.

Asked about a proposal to move critically needed grain through the Strait, Dujarric said consultations led by UN project services chief Jorge Moreira da Silva were continuing.

"It's still very much on the table," he said, adding that progress depended on the willingness of parties to let it proceed.
